From I-5, take California State Highway 36 West. From US-101 take California State Highway 36 East. Once on CA-36, there are two options. Option 1 is a bit longer but the majority of the trip is on paved Forest roads. Option 2 is shorter, but all of the trip is on gravel Forest roads.
