What to expect

Hookups, amenities & reality check

Baja is not the US. Keep expectations calibrated and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Electrical hookup at Baja California campground
Electrical hookup — Baja campo style

Hookups: 15–30-amp most common

50-amp is rare — only Clam Beach near Ensenada and Playa Norte in Los Barriles reliably offer it. Most parks are 20–30-amp. Voltage fluctuates — always use a surge protector (Progressive Industries or Southwire EMS). Full hookups (water + electric + sewer) exist at top parks; many have dump stations only.

WiFi: use your own hotspot

Park WiFi is hit-or-miss. AT&T and Verizon work throughout most of the peninsula. T-Mobile is spotty south of Ensenada. Starlink works perfectly everywhere. A Telcel SIM card ($10–15) gives excellent local coverage.

Showers: bring a backup plan

Most parks have showers, but hot water pressure varies widely. At La Palapa RV Camp in San Felipe, there are no showers at all. Top parks (Pete's Camp, Clam Beach, Campestre Maranatha) have reliable hot showers.

Cash only — everywhere

Plan for USD or pesos cash at every campground. Credit cards are accepted at a small number of hotels and resorts but rarely at RV parks. ATMs are available in Ensenada, San Felipe, Loreto, La Paz, and Los Barriles.

Before you cross

6 Baja RV essentials

🛡

Mexican auto insurance — mandatory

US insurance is not valid in Mexico. Buy Mexican auto insurance before crossing — BajaBound or MexPro. $15–40/day. Non-negotiable; you will face problems without it.

💵

Cash is king

Most Baja RV parks are cash only. USD and pesos both accepted. ATMs are available in all major towns. Bring extra — remote stretches have nothing.

📜

Tourist permit (FMM)

The Forma Migratoria Múltiple is required for stays over 72 hours or travel beyond the Baja Norte free zone. Available at the border crossing or online at inm.gob.mx.

Surge protector is essential

Voltage fluctuations are endemic in Baja. Bring a Progressive Industries EMS or Southwire surge protector. Test any hookup before running appliances.

Fill up at every Pemex

Gas stations can be 100+ miles apart in central and southern Baja. Never pass a Pemex with less than half a tank. Diesel available at most Pemex stations.

🌙

Never drive after dark

Topes (speed bumps), unmarked potholes, and free-range cattle make night driving extremely dangerous anywhere on the peninsula. Plan to be parked by sunset.

FAQ

Baja California RV questions

How many RV parks are there in Baja California?

There are approximately 100 to 150 private RV parks and campgrounds along the Baja California peninsula. San Felipe alone has 6+ established parks (~130–150 total sites). Ensenada corridor has 6+ parks (~200 sites). Los Barriles has 4–5 parks (~120 sites). La Paz has 3–4 parks (~80 sites). Many informal beach camps and fish camps also exist throughout the peninsula.

Do you need a passport to RV in Baja California?

Yes. A valid US passport is required to enter Mexico. You also need a Mexican tourist permit (FMM) for stays over 72 hours, Mexican auto insurance (US insurance is invalid), and a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) if driving beyond the Baja free zone to the Mexican mainland.

What is the best time of year to RV in Baja California?

November through April is peak season for most of Baja. In San Felipe, January and February are the busiest months. In Los Barriles, November through March is best for kiteboarding. La Paz and Loreto are excellent October through June. Summer (June–September) brings extreme heat in San Felipe (100–110°F+) and hurricane risk in southern Baja.

What RV hookups are available in Baja California?

30-amp electric is the most common hookup in Baja. 50-amp is available at Clam Beach RV Park near Ensenada and Playa Norte in Los Barriles — rare elsewhere. 15-amp and 20-amp are most common at budget parks. Full hookups (water + electric + sewer) are available at Pete's Camp, Clam Beach, Guadalupe RV Park, and Campestre Maranatha. Always test hookups before plugging in — voltage fluctuations are common.

Which Baja RV parks are big-rig friendly?

The most big-rig friendly parks from north to south: Clam Beach RV Park near Ensenada (82 sites, 50-amp), Guadalupe RV Park in Valle de Guadalupe, Victor's RV Park in San Felipe, Pete's Camp in San Felipe (pull-through sites, no size limit), Loreto Shores in Loreto, Campestre Maranatha in La Paz, and Playa Norte and Baja Sunrise in Los Barriles. Tight town center streets in Ensenada, Loreto, and Mulege are the main challenge for large rigs.

Is it safe to RV in Baja California?

Millions of US and Canadian RVers travel Baja safely every year. The most common risks are road hazards (topes, potholes, cattle), vehicle breakdowns in remote areas, and petty theft at some beach spots. Practical precautions: Mexican auto insurance (required), roadside assistance covering Mexico, surge protector for hookups, and never drive after dark. Highway 5 to San Felipe and Highway 1 to the Cape are the main paved routes and are generally safe during daylight hours.
