Grand Canyon fully booked

Grand Canyon is sold out.
Here's what to do.

Mather Campground books out months ahead and Desert View fills by 8am in peak season. CamperWatch scans Recreation.gov every 10 minutes and alerts you free the moment a cancellation opens.

Why Grand Canyon sells out

Grand Canyon sees 6 million visitors per year. Mather Campground is the only large South Rim option — 319 sites, reservable year-round — and it fills 6 months out for peak dates.

Two underused options: Desert View (east rim, first-come, best sunrise views) and North Rim Campground (open May–Oct, 1,000ft higher, fraction of the crowds). Both are spectacular and both have more availability than Mather.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Grand Canyon campground sold out?+

Mather Campground is the only large reservable campground on the South Rim and receives the full weight of the park’s 6 million annual visitors. It opens 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov and fills quickly for peak March–October dates. The North Rim is only open May–October and has fewer than 90 sites.

Is Desert View Campground first-come first-served?+

Yes — Desert View (50 sites, east rim) is entirely first-come, first-served, no reservations accepted. It’s 25 miles east of Grand Canyon Village. Arrive by 8am in peak season to claim a site. The payoff: the best unobstructed rim views in the park and far fewer crowds than Mather.

What campgrounds are near the Grand Canyon when the park is full?+

Tusayan AZ (just outside the south entrance) has private campgrounds and RV parks within 10 minutes of the rim. Williams AZ (1 hour south) has multiple options including KOA. Both towns give full park access without the reservation competition. The Grand Canyon Railway from Williams is a fun alternative if you want to skip the drive entirely.

When do Grand Canyon cancellations open?+

Recreation.gov releases Mather Campground cancellations daily at 7:00 AM Mountain time. Shoulder season (March–April and October) sees more cancellation activity than peak July–August. Set a CamperWatch alert to get notified the moment your dates open.

Is the North Rim worth visiting?+

Yes — the North Rim is one of the most underrated places in the National Park System. It’s 1,000 feet higher, 10°F cooler, receives 10% of South Rim visitors, and has arguably better views from Bright Angel Point and Cape Royal. The tradeoff: it’s only open May 15–October 15 and is a 4.5-hour drive from the South Rim.

Do I need a permit to hike below the rim at Grand Canyon?+

Overnight camping below the rim (Bright Angel Campground, Cottonwood, Indian Garden) requires a backcountry permit from the Grand Canyon Backcountry Information Center. Day hikes below the rim do not require a permit. The Rim Trail along the top is permit-free at all times.
