Can the wild ponies at Assateague damage my tent? Yes — the Chincoteague ponies are genuinely wild and dangerous. They bite, kick, and have destroyed camping gear. NPS rules prohibit feeding or approaching them within 10 feet but they will approach you regardless. Store all food and scented items (toothpaste, sunscreen) in your car, not your tent. Use tent stakes and don't leave anything unattended outside. The ponies are most active at dawn and dusk.

Summer (July–August) sells out quickly but there is consistent cancellation turnover. The Maryland side (NPS) requires a reservation; the Virginia side (Chincoteague NWR) has a different permit system. Verify you are booking the correct side of the island for your planned access point.

What should I bring to Assateague for camping? Insect repellent is not optional — the biting flies and mosquitoes are among the worst on the East Coast (May–September). Bring enough for multiple applications per day. Tent footprint and stakes (beach sites have no shade trees to block wind). All cooking equipment stores in your car due to ponies. Bring a tarp — wind and occasional rain are constant. No firewood on the beach — bring your own or use a camp stove.

Is there a shower at Assateague Island campground? Yes — cold outdoor showers are available at the bathhouses near the oceanside campground loops. There are no hot showers. Flush toilets are available. The nearest full facilities are in Ocean City, MD (8 miles north) or Berlin, MD (12 miles west). The camp store near the visitor center has basic supplies.
