Bahía de los Ángeles (Bay of the Angels) is one of the most beautiful and least-visited bays on the Sea of Cortez, a remote paradise 290 miles south of the Tijuana border on Highway 1. The bay is famous for whale shark aggregations (August–November) — you can snorkel alongside the world’s largest fish. Several small family-run camps line the bay. Guillermo’s Restaurant and Camp is the most established, with hookups and a simple restaurant. No big resorts, no party scene, no crowds. Just a turquoise bay, pelicans, dolphins, and manta rays.

Why campers love Bahía de los Ángeles
Bahía de los Ángeles is one of the last genuinely wild, genuinely beautiful marine environments accessible by paved road in North America. The bay is a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. Whale sharks aggregate here August–November — you can snorkel alongside the world’s largest fish from a panga launched 100 yards from your campsite. The water is turquoise and clear. There are no beach bars, no jet skis, no resorts — just the bay, the islands, and the pelicans.
What's new in 2026
2026: Guillermo’s added Starlink for guests (limited hours). Whale shark season confirmed active through late November 2025. Road from Hwy 1 is fully paved and in good condition.
What campers say about Bahía de los Ángeles
"Snorkeling with whale sharks at sunrise in this bay was the single best wildlife experience of my life. We were 6 feet from a 25-foot fish. Nothing prepares you for it."
— iRV2 Forum 2025
"The most beautiful campsite I have ever had in 30 years of Baja travel. Blue water, volcanic islands, frigate birds overhead, and complete silence."
— Campendium 2025
"Go with full tanks. Carry extra. The village had no diesel when we arrived in October. Not a disaster but it required improvising."
— The Dyrt 2025
