Texas State Park Camping FAQ

How do I book Garner State Park in Texas?+
Garner State Park is one of the hardest campgrounds to book in the US. Reservations open 5 months (150 days) in advance through Texas Parks and Wildlife. The most popular sites (waterfront cabins and river sites) sell out within minutes of opening. The summer jukebox dances (Friday and Saturday nights) are a Texas tradition.
Which Texas state park is easiest to book last-minute?+
Caprock Canyon State Park in the Panhandle and Dinosaur Valley near Glen Rose have significantly more availability than Hill Country parks. Both are excellent — Caprock Canyon rarely sells out outside holiday weekends.
Are Texas state parks good year-round?+
Texas state parks are genuinely year-round destinations. Fall (October–November) is peak for Hill Country. Winter is ideal for Caprock Canyon hiking. Summer at Garner and Pedernales Falls is crowded but the river swimming is excellent.
Is there free camping in Texas state parks?+
No developed Texas state park campground is free. However, Caprock Canyon and Pedernales Falls have primitive backpacking sites at $10–$15/night. Palo Duro Canyon has some of the lowest-cost camping in the system at $10–$20/night.
