Acadia National Park on Maine’s Mount Desert Island attracts over 4 million visitors per year to an island with fewer than 500 reservable campsites. Reservations for Blackwoods and Seawall open 6 months in advance and fill within hours during peak summer. The island’s limited size and popularity of Bar Harbor make alternatives scarce.
The insider tip: Book Schoodic Woods instead. It’s a separate section of Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula — equally beautiful, with electric hookups available, and far less competitive. The extra 45-minute drive from Bar Harbor keeps most visitors away.

Yes — significantly. Schoodic Woods is on the Schoodic Peninsula, a separate section of Acadia accessible only by road or ferry, roughly 45 minutes from Bar Harbor. Because it requires extra effort to reach, sites are far easier to book. The campground has electric hookups available and beautiful ocean views. It’s an excellent alternative if the main island campgrounds are full.
Yes. Bar Harbor and the surrounding area have numerous private campgrounds: Bar Harbor Campground, Hadley’s Point Campground, and Spruce Valley Campground all have easier availability than the national park campgrounds and are within 10–15 miles of the park entrance.
