Glacier fully booked

Glacier is sold out.
Here's what to do.

Many Glacier and St. Mary book out months ahead. CamperWatch scans Recreation.gov every 10 minutes and alerts you free the moment a Glacier cancellation opens up.

Why Glacier sells out

Glacier has a very short season and about 1,000 reservable sites for 3+ million annual visitors. Many Glacier (109 sites, 21ft RV limit) sells out immediately. Going-to-the-Sun Road also requires a separate vehicle timed-entry permit in peak season.

Best alternative: Two Medicine Campground (southeast valley) \u2014 identical alpine scenery, far fewer visitors, much easier to book. It\u2019s a 2-hour drive from Many Glacier but widely considered the most underrated campground in the park.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Glacier National Park campgrounds sold out?+

Glacier has a very short season (June–September) and about 1,000 reservable campsites for 3+ million annual visitors. Many Glacier (109 sites, 21ft RV limit due to road constraints) sells out within minutes of opening. Going-to-the-Sun Road requires a vehicle reservation May–September, adding another booking layer.

Which Glacier campground is easiest to book?+

Two Medicine Campground (southeast valley, 99 sites) is consistently the easiest to book — same dramatic alpine scenery as Many Glacier, a fraction of the visitors. Apgar Campground (west entrance, 194 sites, year-round partial) also has more availability than the east-side campgrounds and is the closest to Lake McDonald.

Do I need a vehicle reservation for Going-to-the-Sun Road?+

Yes — from late May through early September, vehicles entering between Apgar and St. Mary require a timed-entry permit. Campground guests with a confirmed reservation are exempt from the timed-entry requirement for the section their campground is on. Check nps.gov/glac for current requirements, which update annually.

Are there campgrounds near Glacier when the park is full?+

Yes. Whitefish MT (30 miles west) has private campgrounds and is a charming Montana mountain town. Kalispell (35 miles west) has more options including KOA. On the east side, Browning MT (Blackfeet Nation) has basic camping. All let you access the park daily.

When do Glacier cancellations open?+

Recreation.gov releases Glacier cancellations daily at 7:00 AM Mountain time. Two Medicine and Apgar have more cancellation activity than Many Glacier. Set a CamperWatch alert to be notified immediately when your dates open.

Is Many Glacier worth the hassle?+

Many Glacier is widely considered the most spectacular campground in the entire national park system. Grinnell Glacier is a 10-mile round trip from camp. Grizzly bears, mountain goats, and moose are regular sightings. The 21ft RV limit keeps big rigs out. If you can get a site — take it.
