Frequently asked questions

Why is Sequoia National Park sold out?+

Sequoia and Kings Canyon combined receive nearly 1.5 million visitors per year and have a short camping season at high elevations. Lodgepole and Dorst Creek open 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov and book out quickly for summer weekends.

Can I still get a Sequoia campsite when everything is full?+

Azalea in Kings Canyon is year-round and often has better availability than Sequoia sites. Set a CamperWatch alert for Lodgepole or Dorst Creek to catch cancellations. Potwisha and South Fork campgrounds in the park foothills are reservable with more availability.

What campgrounds near Sequoia are easier to book?+

Sequoia National Forest (surrounding the national park) has multiple campgrounds with more availability — Stony Creek and Horse Camp are good options near Giant Sequoia National Monument. Three Rivers area (outside the south entrance) has private campgrounds.

When does Sequoia open for camping?+

Lodgepole opens in late May, Dorst Creek in mid-June. Azalea (Kings Canyon) is open year-round. High elevation campgrounds close with the first heavy snow, typically October–November.
