Washoe Lake State Park
✓ Sites AvailableWild horses, bald eagles, and mountain views — midway between Reno and Carson City
Washoe Lake State Park sits in a sweeping high-desert valley framed by the Sierra Nevada, Carson Range, and Virginia Mountains. The 49-site campground offers two distinct loops: Loop A with water and electric hookups (up to 45ft RVs), Loop B for dry camping with generous site spacing. Wild mustangs roam the park freely — campers regularly wake to horses grazing at the lake edge. Bald eagles, white pelicans, osprey, and mule deer are year-round residents. Thirty minutes from Reno, thirty from Carson City — close enough for resupply runs, remote enough to feel like you're genuinely out.

Known Issues
Showers are push-button timed and low-pressure — functional but not great. Lake water quality can be an issue in drought years (algae blooms) — check before swimming or paddling. Horse manure on trails is a common complaint. Loop B has limited shade.

Why campers love Washoe Lake State Park
Washoe Lake State Park delivers something almost no campground near Reno can match: genuine wildness without a long drive. Free-roaming wild mustangs visit the lakeside at dawn, bald eagles fish the shallows, and white pelicans cruise overhead in formation. The 49-site campground frames three mountain ranges — Sierra Nevada to the west, Carson Range to the south, Virginia Mountains to the east. Loop A has water and electric hookups for RVs up to 45ft. Loop B is spacious dry camping with real privacy between sites. It sits exactly between Reno and Carson City, so you get wilderness mornings and town dinners without effort.
What's new in 2026
Washoe Lake levels were healthy in 2025–2026 following above-average Sierra snowpack. Loop A hookup sites upgraded with improved electrical pedestals. Equestrian group area now reservable through Reserve Nevada online platform.
