The last undeveloped coast in Baja. World-class roosterfish and dorado fishing, kite surfing at Los Barriles, and primitive beachfront camps where you may be the only person on the beach.
Why the East Cape
The East Cape is one of the world's premier sport fishing destinations. Roosterfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and marlin — hire a local panga for $150–250/day or catch roosterfish from shore with a surface plug at dawn.
Los Barriles (20 miles north of El Cardonal) is a world-class kite surfing destination. Steady El Norte wind blows November through March at 20–35 knots — consistent and reliable. Multiple kite schools and rental shops operate on the beach.
The volcanic silhouette of Isla Cerralvo rising from the sea at sunrise is one of the great Baja views. From El Cardonal beach, the island sits 15 miles offshore. Manta rays and mobula rays jump in the channel between the cape and the island.
The East Cape is one of very few places in the world where roosterfish can be caught consistently from shore. Cast a surface plug into the beach break at dawn and you may hook a roosterfish — one of the most spectacular-looking gamefish in the Sea of Cortez.
No resort development, no town glow — the East Cape beach sky at night is extraordinary. Milky Way visible from the beach on moonless nights throughout winter.
The stretch from Los Barriles south to the cape tip is the last significant undeveloped coastline on the Sea of Cortez. Camping on beaches that the Los Cabos resort machine hasn't yet reached.

FAQ
The Baja East Cape (Cabo del Este or East Cape) refers to the southeastern corner of the Baja California Sur peninsula — the coastline between Los Barriles in the north and the cape tip near San José del Cabo. This stretch of Sea of Cortez coastline is characterized by strong El Norte winds (November–March), world-class sport fishing, kite surfing at Los Barriles, and small fishing villages like El Cardonal. It remains significantly less developed than the Los Cabos resort corridor on the Pacific side.
The East Cape is one of the most productive sport fishing areas in the Sea of Cortez. Primary species: roosterfish (January–June, caught from shore), dorado (May–November, peak summer), yellowfin tuna (April–December, offshore), wahoo (September–December), marlin (summer). Local pangas are available for hire in El Cardonal and Los Barriles for $150–250/day. Shore fishing for roosterfish with surface plugs is possible directly from the beach at El Cardonal at dawn.
Yes — Los Barriles is one of the world's best kite surfing destinations. The El Norte wind blows consistently from November through March at 20–35 knots with reliable thermal enhancement in the afternoons. Multiple kite schools offer instruction for all levels. The flat-water lagoon just north of town is ideal for beginners; the open Sea of Cortez offers more challenging conditions for experienced riders. Los Barriles is 20 miles north of El Cardonal.
El Cardonal is accessible from La Paz (50 miles north) via a paved road through Los Barriles and down the East Cape coast. The road from Los Barriles to El Cardonal is paved but in variable condition — a high-clearance vehicle is helpful but not strictly required in dry conditions. Do not attempt in a large motorhome without scouting first. Stock up on water and fuel in La Paz or Los Barriles before heading south.
Yes — the East Cape is one of the safer areas of Baja for camping. The small fishing villages are tight-knit communities where visitors are known and generally watched over. The primary concerns are logistical (no water, no fuel, no services, no cell service) rather than safety. Come fully self-sufficient, tell someone your itinerary, and carry a satellite communicator (Garmin inReach) for emergencies. The nearest hospital is in La Paz.
November through April is ideal. For kite surfing: November through March (El Norte wind). For fishing: year-round, but October–May is most consistent for diverse species. For calm camping conditions: November–April. Avoid June–September for camping: summer heat is extreme (105°F+) and hurricane season (late summer) can bring rough conditions. The East Cape is most active in winter when snowbirds and kite surfers fill Los Barriles.
